Traffic between Tivat, Kotor and Budva: a plan that saves the day
From mid-July to the end of August, a short distance on the map can turn into a long wait. The right departure time and a well-placed base leave more of your holiday for the coast.

Allow an hour of buffer, not just the map estimate
The main problem is not the distance between beaches but the approaches into Tivat, Kotor and Budva. From mid-July to the end of August, the wait to enter town often reaches an hour or more, turning a short drive on the map into a large part of the day. Avoid planning two towns, lunch and a beach with no room for delay.
Our first-hand experience: on Saturday, 8 August 2026, the drive from the Kotor roundabout to central Tivat took exactly 1 hour 30 minutes.
An early start beats a clever shortcut
The most reliable plan is to leave early, before beach traffic, guest changeovers, excursions and airport transfers overlap. Return before late afternoon or stay for dinner and travel after the main wave. A side road is not always a shortcut: once every navigation app suggests it, it fills quickly too.

In our experience, Sunday is the one day of the week when the roads are usually noticeably lighter. On Sunday, 9 August 2026, the drive from Tivat to Kotor was clear — one day after the wider route took an hour and a half.
For beach-hopping by car, stay between the three towns
If you are bringing your own car to explore the beaches, JMM Apartments in Radanovići give you easy access to Jaz and Trsteno, Plavi Horizonti and beaches across the Luštica peninsula. The apartments sit at a practical meeting point between Kotor, Tivat and Budva, so a beach day does not have to begin by entering one of the congested town centres.
Choose one direction per day
Group plans by direction: Jaz and Trsteno together, Plavi Horizonti and Luštica on another day, and Kotor as a separate early-morning or evening outing. You will pass the same bottlenecks fewer times and spend less of the holiday watching the arrival estimate change.
- For a beach day — Leave early, carry water and do not assume that parking will be quick to find.
- For the airport or ferry — Add at least an hour to the normal driving time and check conditions again immediately before departure.
- For Kotor or Budva — Choose one town for that part of the day and keep the departure flexible if a queue is building.
